Grilled Cedar Plank Salmon

Grilled Cedar Plank Salmon with Grilled Sweet Potatoes

Looking for new recipes for summer outdoor grilling? Try this Grilled Cedar Plank Salmon! Perfect dish to elevate your summer outdoor dinner menu. It pairs well with my recipe for Grilled Sweet Potatoes.

This delicious grilled salmon is surprisingly simple. I created this dish when I was trying out grilling planks for the first time. I saw the grilling planks, and I wanted to give them a whirl. My family really enjoys salmon but I have never grilled salmon so I thought why not try the planks and salmon together.

Grilling Planks

Grilling planks may be purchased in different types of wood. I have now tried both cedar and hickory, but I felt the cedar pairs well with the flavor of the salmon. The planks do require some prep ahead of time. They must be soaked prior to grilling. Ensure you follow the instructions for preparing the planks, usually provided right on the grilling plank. Another tip, ensure you are keeping an eye on the plank while cooking because they can catch on fire. If it does occur, just give the plank a couple of squirts of water which will dampen the flame.

Preparing the salmon

The salmon preparation is very simple. Just season and go. Sometimes I buy a large piece of salmon and cut it down. However, most of the time I buy fresh salmon already cut down in the desired size of fillets. You want to have same sized fillets for an even cook, otherwise some fillets will be overcooked while others are undercooked.

I am a fan of Old Bay seasoning, and I always have it on hand. It really has multiple uses not just fish and seafood. One of my favorite salmon dishes is Old Bay Seasoned Sweet Potato Salmon patties from Hello Fresh which inspired me to pair sweet potatoes with the Grilled Cedar Plank Salmon.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes

My grilled sweet potatoes are easily prepared and grilled alongside of the grilled salmon making it an easy side dish for a full delicious outdoor meal. Same rule for sweet potatoes as salmon, ensure you cube the potatoes evenly so every bite has the same cook. The sweet potatoes need an additional 5 minutes longer than the salmon so make sure you start the potatoes just a little earlier. It is also important to flip you potatoes about every 10 minutes while grilling so no one side gets burnt or over-cooked. Click here to find my recipe for Grilled Sweet Potatoes.
